This text is devoted to the neurobiology of nociceptors, specialised receptors for pain, which were first described conceptually nearly 100 years ago. It provides an overview of the structure of nociceptors, their role in signalling injury, their transduction mechanisms, and changes to these mechanisms which result from nerve injury or regeneration.
