Neuromorphic Circuits: A constructive approach (IOP ebooks) (IPEM-IOP Series in Physics and Engineering in Medicine and Biology), Alice C Parker, 9780750350952

Description

The focus of this text is on analogue circuits, modelling brain neurons which contrasts with computer models that simulate behaviour using conventional (or at least digital) multiprocessors, Autonomous vehicle navigation, identity determination, robotic manufacturing, and medical diagnostics. These are all engineering challenges that will benefit from technological solutions with specialized analogue neuromorphic hardware replacing software simulations or digital hardware. A key further motivation for creating artificial brain structures is neural prosthetics. While other very difficult engineering problems are being solved to interface biological and artificial neurons, understanding the technological requirements and possibilities for isolated artificial brain structures could accelerate the hope that such protheses would become a reality. This book will entail a detailed coverage of analogue neural electronics covering the central nervous system (CNS), the brain and spinal cord. Neurons outside the central nervous system, in the body, are peripheral neurons, and form the peripheral nervous system (PNS). These and associated approaches will be covered as well as appropriate biomedical applications incorporated where appropriate. End of chapter problems and examples will be included. Key Features: Presents a comprehensive overview of neuromorphic circuits and applications Covers neural input circuits – the Synapse – and neural processing – the dendritic arbor – in detail Offers an overview of the latest research in variable neural behaviour and neural systems Details the role on nanotechnology in neuromorphic circuits The lead author has successfully used the class notes for her course taught over the past 5 years, which will form the basis for this new text. Will include end-of-chapter problems and solutions
