The ultimate aim for the pharmaceutical industry is to provide drugs with 100 percent specificity for the target site, that is: provide optimum efficacy and no side effects. Towards this end, research work is currently focusing on the mechanisms and assessment of drug absorption and drug delivery. Once these are more fully understood, the progress on targeting drugs can accelerate towards the ultimate delivery system and the ultimate dosage form, whether niosomes, particulate carrier systems or other biological systems. In parallel to these studies, researchers are tackling the ways in which a drug should be administered to provide self-regulating and programmed delivery and, consequently, control drug dosage with a high degree of accuracy.
